Course Introduction, Tree Percolation, Branching Processes

This lecture introduces the overall aims and focus of this class. We discuss a few applications from science and engineering, such as wireless communications and social networking, that benefit from the insights and models discussed in this class. We then introduce tree percolation, the most basic model exhibiting phase transitions.
